sledgehammer

released in april 1986
* additional b-side on compact disc single

sledgehammer
don't break this rhythm

i have the touch '85 remix*

Gabriel's most successful single to date also contains one of his most interesting B-sides, previously (and subsequently) unreleased in any form. The single version of Sledgehammer has a slightly different intro to the LP. The '85 remix of I Have the Touch crops up very regularly on Peter Gabriel singles and is also the remix featured on Shaking the Tree.

don't give up

released in october 1986
* alternate B-side

don't give up
in your eyes
special mix

curtains*

The initial UK release included a large poster with an image from the Don't Give Up's video. The A-side is a direct lift from So. The B-side is the first official release of the In Your Eyes special mix in the UK. Other territories (such as the US and Canada) where the special mix had already been released included Curtains as the B-side.

big time

released in march 1987
+ alternate b-side
* additional tracks on simultaneous compact disc release

big time
curtains

we do what we're told+

big time extended version*
no self control*
across the river*

The version of Big Time found here is identical to the LP. Curtains is a previously unreleased B-side (in the UK and Australia). In territories such as the US and Canada the bs-de is replaced with the LP version of We Do What We're Told.

Like Sledgehammer, the Big Time single was released as an EP on compact disc with the addition of an extended version of the title track, No Self Control (from Peter Gabriel).

red rain

released in june 1987
* additional b-side on 12" single

red rain
ga ga
i go swimming instrumental

walk through the fire*

The A-side is a direct lift from So. Ga Ga is a previously unreleased track. Walk Through the Fire is the remixed version released as a single in May 1984.

biko /
no more apartheid

released in november 1987
*additional track released on compact disc

biko live
no more apartheid

i have the touch 85 remix*

This single was released to capitalise on the success of So and to coincide with Cry Freedom, Richard Attenborough's film biopic of Steven Biko. The live version of Biko was recorded at Blossom Music Center, Cleveland Ohio 27th July 1987. No More Apartheid is from the Sun City record.

The '85 remix of I Have the Touch is a common "extra track" on Peter Gabriel singles and is the version featured on Shaking the Tree.

This release is included in the extra-curricular activities as the single release of No More Apartheid.

solsbury hill/
shaking the tree

released in december 1990
*additional track released on compact disc

solsbury hill
shaking the tree

games without frontiers live*

Released to coincide with the compilation Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats, the A and B sides of this single are taken directly from the album. The track Shakin' the Tree from Youssou N'Dour's The Lion was released as an A side single in 1989, however this version is considered the first "Peter Gabriel" release of the song.

This release is included in the extra-curricular activities as the single release of Shaking the Tree.

digging in the dirt

released in september 1992
* additional tracks on compact disc

digging in the dirt
quiet steam

digging in the dirt instrumental*
bashi-bazouk*

Digging in the Dirt is a direct lift from Us. Quiet Steam is a completely remade version of Steam (some argue it is an earlier version of the song which was scrapped in favour of something more commercial). The instrumental version of the title track has also been remixed. Bashi-Bazouk is previously unreleased (although it cropped up as an eleventh track on initial Japanese pressings of Us).

steam

released in january 1993
* additional tracks on compact disc
+ alternate fourth CD track

steam
games without frontiers
massive/db mix

steam oh, oh, let off steam mix 12"*
steam
oh, oh let off steam mix dub*

games without frontiers+

The version of Steam here does not differ from Us. Games Without Frontiers is a remix by Massive Attack and David Bottril that sounds suspiciously like the song was entirely re-recorded in the Us style.

The two Steam remixes on CD are unremarkable dance-style rehashes by the Bomb Squad (whoever they are).

The alternate version of the CD single replaces the Steam "mix dub" with the live recording of Games Without Frontiers from the P.O.V. video, a common "extra track" on CD editions.

kiss that frog

released in september 1993
* additional track on compact disc
+ alternate additional tracks on special edition CD

kiss that frog
kiss that frog
mindblender mix

digging in the dirt rich e mix*

across the river+
shaking the tree
bottril remix+

Kiss That Frog is an edited version of the LP. The Mindblender Mix is a mostly instrumental version of the remix found on the Kiss That Frog video (which doubled as the Mindblender ride-film), and is found in full and edited forms on the various releases of this single.

Digging in the Dirt Rich E Mix contains extra lyrics to the LP version.

Across the River was originally released on Music & Rhythm and various singles throughout the Peter Gabriel catalogue.

lovetown

released in june 1994
* additional track on compact disc

lovetown
love to be loved

a different drum*

Lovetown appears on the Philadelphia soundtrack album and on the Real World Notes ECD #1. Love To Be Loved and A Different Drum are in their respective LP versions.

sw live ep

released in august 1994

red rain
come talk to me
san jacinto
mercy street

The only purpose-built EP in the Peter Gabriel catalogue acts a sampler for the "forthcoming" LP Secret World Live (the EP was in fact released at the same time as the album). THe first two tracks are lifted directly from the album with crossfades between. San Jacinto is not featured on the album, but crops up in the accompanying video. Some discographies suggest that the version of Mercy Street is from the P.O.V. live video release from 1987. The differing recording and mixing credits on this track seems to support this assertion.

while the earth sleeps

released in june 1996

while the earth sleeps album version
while the earth sleeps long version

Note the credit on this single is Deep Forest and Peter Gabriel. There is an additional track on the CD that is neither by Peter Gabriel nor Deep Forest. The Long Version of While the Earth Sleeps is almost double the length of that found on the Strange Days soundtrack and has not been otherwise released.
