Lunar Links

From the Straight Dope, Uncle Cecil answers questions like...Do things get crazy when the moon is full? and I plan to destroy the moon. What effect would this have on the earth? One bad consequence needs to be added to the list: There would nothing to base the Up countdown on, thus giving PG yet another excuse for a delay. Ever wondered if there was a link between the moon and menstruation? Wonder no more.

The Straight Dope Advisory Board answers this question...Was the Apollo moon landing a hoax? In doing research for these links, we've discovered that there are a lot of loonies who don't believe man has been on the moon. Maybe someone some day will try to claim that Mac Cat never went to Solsbury Hill, either. Why does the moon appear bigger near the horizon? and Why does the moon appear different near the equator? are lesssons on optical illusions.

The Skeptic's Dictionary weighs in on several lunatic claims.

Our favorite Stargazer, Jack Horkheimer is staring in a series of cartoons about astronomy. We picked out a few that focuses on the moon...This explores where a few moon expressions come from. This explains the different names of the moon, and this talks about the Harvest Moon. which is we estimate is when the new album will be out!

Here's Moxie's favorite, a 'toon about the connection between cats the moon.

And speaking of cats and the moon, here is a favorite poem by W.B. Yeates called The Cat and The Moon. Not only is it a beautiful poem, it's also featured in the Real World Multimedia project Griffin and Sabine.

Want to get beyond the moon? You may ask, what is bad astronomy? Who is the bad astronomer? Does he have a book published? And what exactly is his schtick?

The problem is that when people think of the Hubble Telescope, they think, "boondoggle" as all everyone remembers is that it didn't work right when it first launched. Too bad, as since it's been fixed it's been giving back freakin' brilliant pictures. Look at these and read the captions and prepare to be awed. And if that doesn't inspire you, then look at some more direct from Hubble.

This page would be complete unless it included a link to NASA. There's also the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where we found an interestsing article concerning an album title we hope PG doesn't use. And we like the name of this spacecraft...any hope of getting Phil Collins to join it?

If you have any groovy links concerning astronomy and/or the moon, tell us we'll check it out. So long for now, fellow lunatic fringers! And good luck, Mr. Gorsky.
