AWWCKelere: .
AWWCKelere: Peter Gabriel
AWWCKelere: .
AWWCKelere: Being on the cutting edge since Genesis,
AWWCKelere: Peter has always strived to take music and
AWWCKelere: expression to the limit. Please join us as we
AWWCKelere: chat with Peter and the Real World Multimedia
AWWCKelere: team and discuss their latest multimedia CD
AWWCKelere: title "Eve". "'With Eve we wanted to go a
AWWCKelere: little deeper than we did with the Xplora1 CD-ROM.
AWWCKelere: .
AWWCKelere: Peter will only be taking questions about
AWWCKelere: the Eve project - thank you :-)
AWWCKelere: .
AWWCKelere: We welcome Peter! Thank you for your time!
AWWCKelere: .
AWWCKelere: **~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**
AWWCKelere: Peter, start us off with some background on the Eve project.
  AWWCDale: oops.... peter got punted....
AWWCCys: We began talking with STarwave about an interactive
   AWWCCys: song book intially.
PeterGabrie This developed and we started looking at ideas
PeterGabrie nvolving different interfaces using art and
PeterGabrie music.
PeterGabrie And an overall evolving environment..
PeterGabrie Mike: At that stage we decided to work with
PeterGabrie ome fine contemporary artists and approached
PeterGabrie Helen Cadwick, Cathy DeMonchaux, Yayoi Kusama
PeterGabrie and Nils-Udo
PeterGabrie and each of them would then work on one song
PeterGabrie and one section of the environment.
   AWWCCys: **~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**
   AWWCCys: .
AWWCCys: Welcome! We are speaking to Peter Gabriel
   AWWCCys: .
AWWCCys: This is a full protocol conference. To ask a
AWWCCys: question of our guest please send your question
AWWCCys: to AWWC Jax in a private message. Thank you ; )
   AWWCCys: .
   AWWCCys: **~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**
PeterGabrie That will probably serve as a brief background
AWWCDave: *Jim007bon asks: 22:08 What did you hope to
AWWCDave: accomplish artistically with the Eve project--
AWWCDave: and do you feel that you realized your vision?
AWWCCys: we are speaking to Michael Coulson - Creative Director RW
   AWWCCys: with Peter Gabriel
AWWCCys: I think we ar ejust scratching at the surface
PeterGabrie but it's a very exciting surface to be scratching
PeterGabrie at
PeterGabrie To be it's a very interesting evironment to be
PeterGabrie working in, with very interesting creative ideas
PeterGabrie There are always limitations from the technoloyg
PeterGabrie but it's a heck of a lot more satisfying than
PeterGabrie what we were able to do 3 years ago
PeterGabrie So it's an experiment that all of us enjoyed.
PeterGabrie And we didn't upset any of the artists who were
PeterGabrie after initial caution were enthusiastic about the
PeterGabrie experiment
PeterGabrie Mike: It turned into a new type of artform
PeterGabrie and explorer was more like a random access magazine
PeterGabrie whereas I think with Eve, we called it a music
PeterGabrie and art adventure, whereas it developed into more
PeterGabrie of a game and a musical experience.
AWWCJaxO: Crawler asks... when will eve be released?
PeterGabrie : It will be released on the 30th January
PeterGabrie worldwide.
PeterGabrie It will be available in stores in Europe from that
PeterGabrie date and from the radio Realworld internet site
PeterGabrie which is at http://realworld.on.net/eve
PeterGabrie It will be actually send out to the United States
PeterGabrie directly from the USA.
PeterGabrie So no cross Atantic problems, it will be directly
PeterGabrie fulfilled from the USA.
AWWCDave: *O00me00O asks: HOW much different is this goign to be from the
XPLORA1 CD ROM?
PeterGabrie Mike Large wwill be answering
PeterGabrie It's a lot different
PeterGabrie Xplora1 is more of an interactive magazine
PeterGabrie whereas Eve exists on two or three levels
PeterGabrie an interactive experience, an adventure
PeterGabrie and the world that you explore, the graphic adventure
PeterGabrie serves as an interface to the content.
PeterGabrie Peter: I think it was a direct collaboration
PeterGabrie with fine artists that had not worked with computer
PeterGabrie before.
PeterGabrie There is also a subtext about relationships.
PeterGabrie Hence, Adam and Eve reference.
PeterGabrie Mike: I would say that, perhaps, a fundamental
PeterGabrie thing that if you bought all of Petert's records
PeterGabrie and video and all the artwork associated with it
PeterGabrie you could recreated Xplora on your living room
PeterGabrie table.
PeterGabrie The thing about Eve is that it is totally the
PeterGabrie computer. A computer experience.
PeterGabrie Mike COulson adds...
PeterGabrie MikeC: With Eve you actually enter a totally new
PeterGabrie world where you actually get to interact with
PeterGabrie Peter's music videos and make your own music
PeterGabrie and visual landscape within the game that you play
PeterGabrie so it's much more of a medium where you, a player,
PeterGabrie : contribute to it. We give you elements but you
PeterGabrie can put those elements to use in your own way
PeterGabrie We give you the tool with Eve to be your own artist
PeterGabrie Your not just a vouyer you actually get to experienc
PeterGabrie eit itself.
PeterGabrie ga
AWWCJaxO: MacCat asks How is it that Eve explores
  AWWCJaxO: relationships? Please explain.

AWWCCys: and his ability to translate "techie" jargon into usable
AWWCCys: and fun advice for the rest of us.

PeterGabrie ::: conferring with my friends in the room who helped
PeterGabrie              with this ::::
PeterGabrie Besides it being a relationship room in which
PeterGabrie people explore their way of relating to relationships
PeterGabrie the overall structure is based on the evolution
PeterGabrie of a relationship.
PeterGabrie ga
AWWCKelere: How did StarWave get involved?
PeterGabrie Ralph Derrickson answers:
PeterGabrie Ralph: We had some ideas about how to explore
PeterGabrie the use of computers and interactive music and
PeterGabrie we dabbled with some ideas that involved cutting
PeterGabrie up one of Peter's songs "Come Talk To Me" and
PeterGabrie as an idea for exploring interactive music
PeterGabrie and we showed that to Peter when he was in Seattle
PeterGabrie and didn't get upset with the idea in fact he
PeterGabrie liked it and took it and ran with it
PeterGabrie From there, Peter took the idea and we started to
PeterGabrie put together a whole lot of visual and other ideas
PeterGabrie and thats when we really got started.
PeterGabrie It's safe to say that Starwave with Peter from the
PeterGabrie very beginning and that it really took shape
PeterGabrie from there
PeterGabrie Peter: there were two creative teams
PeterGabrie one in Seattle, STarwave and one in England,
PeterGabrie Realworld
PeterGabrie Startwave also created their own Dr Seuss engine
PeterGabrie which enabled us to do a lot of things that were
PeterGabrie would not have been possible without author
PeterGabrie other off the shelf tools.
PeterGabrie ga
AWWCJaxO: Ender asks Will the CD work on both popular platforms.. both PC
and Mac??
PeterGabrie Yes it will!
PeterGabrie It is a hybrid disk and it works on both Macintosh
PeterGabrie and PC and it works identically.
PeterGabrie And the mixes that you make on a PC you can run
PeterGabrie on a Mac and vice versa, it truly is a duel product
AWWCDave: *Ratsfast asks:Is the Eve Project a game or an interactive
"history" of your works.
PeterGabrie Part game based and although it uses existing
PeterGabrie or previously released songs it is fundamentally
PeterGabrie new material and many layers of music which
PeterGabrie were never heard of in final disks are able to
PeterGabrie be utilized on a disk, for example, on the
PeterGabrie interactive IMXs, there are 36 separate backing
PeterGabrie tracks or moods, as we call them.
AWWCDave: *Jim007bon asks:After working on your second
AWWCDave: CD-ROM project, how do you feel about the
AWWCDave: potential of the CD-ROM as an art form?
PeterGabrie I think that CD-ROM as a medium has a limited
PeterGabrie lifespan but DVD coming along very fast and
PeterGabrie other formats that it may not have a long life.
PeterGabrie However the potential for what the content is doing
PeterGabrie can have a much longer life, regardless of what
PeterGabrie platform or vehicle that it's travelling in.
PeterGabrie We believe that there will be a lot of possiblities
PeterGabrie for linking up with the net and providing a lot of
PeterGabrie the information in disk form which would take
PeterGabrie ages to download and then being able to manipulate
PeterGabrie it thru the net.
AWWCKelere: How did you enjoy participating with Gil Amelio in the keynote
today?
AWWCKelere: We all loved it :-)
PeterGabrie I wont give up my day job :-)
AWWCKelere: LOL!
PeterGabrie ;-) but I get nervous at these events and it wasn't
PeterGabrie as bad as I thought it might have been in terms
PeterGabrie of discomfort levels.
PeterGabrie It's an interesting world for me to visit
PeterGabrie occasionally
PeterGabrie and there were a lot of interesting and fascinating
PeterGabrie conversations.
PeterGabrie ga
AWWCDave: *Jim007bon asks:What were some of the artistic
AWWCDave: dilemmas that arose when you were creating the
AWWCDave: Eve project and how did you resolve them?
PeterGabrie The main artistic dilemma was how far we could ask
PeterGabrie artists disect and play with their work.
PeterGabrie I think that this was a slowly evolving relationship
PeterGabrie where trust was built up over a period of time
PeterGabrie And as it became clear as to the potential, each
PeterGabrie artist became more willing and encouraged us to
PeterGabrie play with their work.
PeterGabrie But in each case there was an initial period of
PeterGabrie scepticism. .
AWWCJaxO: Crawler asks: i have read that we will be able to mix our own
versions of your songs with Eve.
AWWCJaxO: Is there any chance that a section of Radio Real World could be
devoted to posting our creations
AWWCJaxO: so other fans could hear them?
PeterGabrie Yes is the answer and I know Ralph had some ideas
PeterGabrie about this.
PeterGabrie MikeL: On the website that is appearing for EVe
PeterGabrie people can post their performances so that other
PeterGabrie people can swap and play them
PeterGabrie and hopefully we'll be able to persuade Peter to
PeterGabrie post a few as well.
PeterGabrie ga
PeterGabrie Sure!
PeterGabrie Peter: Sure!
AWWCJaxO: MacCat asks: How did the artists like working on Eve?
AWWCJaxO: You mentioned that they did not use computers before working on Eve.
PeterGabrie MikeC: Helen Chadick took it like a duck to water
PeterGabrie and very much enjoyed designing with us on the
PeterGabrie computer and she worked very closely with Peter
PeterGabrie in creating an interface with the musical toy
PeterGabrie "shaking the tree"
PeterGabrie and she was also very excited by us using her
PeterGabrie chocolate bubble sculpture as the main opening
PeterGabrie screen for Eve
PeterGabrie And enjoyed the job the joke of having bubbling
PeterGabrie chocolate coming up on the computer screen.
PeterGabrie Cathy D was a little reticent to begin with
PeterGabrie but once she could see that the computer could
PeterGabrie be sympathic to her work and that in fact that
PeterGabrie some of her work was similar to games such as
PeterGabrie "Space Invaders" and could be brought to life
PeterGabrie on the computer and made to exist in a way in
PeterGabrie that they didn't in a sculpture, she became
PeterGabrie very excited.
PeterGabrie Nils-I spent a week at Realworld creating
PeterGabrie installations
PeterGabrie Nils-I spent a week at Realworld creating
PeterGabrie installations
PeterGabrie on the river at the studio and making sculptures
PeterGabrie which
PeterGabrie he set fire to. Such as floating torch sculptures
PeterGabrie and a nest with a little boy inside which he also
PeterGabrie floated down the river. For Nils it was the first
PeterGabrie time with computers and it gave him the opportunity
PeterGabrie to film his installations.
PeterGabrie And then repeat the experience.
PeterGabrie time and again.
PeterGabrie but using the Mac.
AWWCKelere: Peter and group, final thoughts? Time goes too quickly....
PeterGabrie Mike Large answers...
PeterGabrie MikeL: We hope you are going to find Eve interesting
PeterGabrie and please come visit http://realworld.on.net/eve
PeterGabrie don't forget to check out the rest of the
PeterGabrie realworld site while your there.
PeterGabrie We think that everyone is interested in relationships
PeterGabrie everyone wants to fall in love,
PeterGabrie but entering the world of Eve maybe you can find
PeterGabrie out a little bit more about the puzzles of life and
PeterGabrie love.
PeterGabrie And for the first time ever get a chance to create
PeterGabrie a Peter Gabriel interactive music video yourself
PeterGabrie and get a chance to use to use technology which
PeterGabrie is at the forefront of what a computer can do.
PeterGabrie Ralph: We invite you to come explore Eve and find out
PeterGabrie some of the mysteries on the site
PeterGabrie today at the keynote we just showed you a tiny taste
PeterGabrie of what is in store.
PeterGabrie Thank you Apple Computer for making this possible.
PeterGabrie Yeah! Apple Compuer!
PeterGabrie Computer! :-)
